This is based in the Outpatients Department of St Michael’s Hospital in Dun Laoghaire. This service is provided by local GPs on a rota. An appointment is required. If you have a medical emergency call 999 or 112.

House Calls

House calls are generally reserved for the very ill. A more comprehensive examination can frequently be carried out in the surgery.

New Patients

Regretfully we are not taking on new patients. You may visit the HSE website to find another GP in this area.

Prescribing Policy

Some medications require a 6 or 12 monthly review or blood tests. In such cases you will be required to make an appointment.
In conjunction with best practice guidelines, we actively discourage prescribing benzodiazepines or sleeping tablets on an ongoing basis.

How To Order Your Prescription

Ballybrack Medical Centre now operates a policy of accepting prescription requests in written form.
The easiest way to do this is on this website. Alternatively, you may pick up or print a prescription request form and post or drop it in to us.

Tests and Results

Most results will be available 5-7 days after the test takes place. We recommend you sign up for texting consent (available at reception) in order for us to let you know if your result is normal or if you require to follow up. If you have a blood test or x-ray it is your responsibility to ring for your result. Please do not assume the result is normal if you do not hear from the practice.
Patients should ring for their own results with the exception of patients younger than 16 years old. This is for confidentiality reasons. If your tests are normal the receptionist will be able to give you the result. If there is an abnormality you will be advised on a course of action or asked to speak/see the doctor.

If you have not received a notification after 2 weeks please phone us.

Maternity Combined Care Explained

Combined care is offered to all women free of charge. This can be carried out in conjunction with care provided by a maternity hospital (public/semi-private/private) or Midwife-led clinic.
You will be entitled to six antenatal visits for 1st pregnancy and seven visits for subsequent pregnancies and two postnatal visits at the GP surgery in addition to your six antenatal visits at the maternity hospital. All pregnancy-related GP visits provided as part of the programme are free of charge.
Ideally, you should attend the surgery as soon as you are pregnant. You can self refer to a maternity hospital for assessment, blood tests and a scan. Subsequently, your visits will alternate between the hospital and the surgery and become more frequent as your pregnancy progresses. An approximate schedule of visits would be as follows:
• As soon as pregnant Visit GP (less than 12 weeks)
• Week 20 Hospital
• Week 24 GP
• Week 28 GP (Hospital if first pregnancy)
• Week 30 GP
• Week 32 Hospital
• Week 34 GP
• Week 36 Hospital
• Week 37 GP
• Week 38 Hospital
• Week 39 GP
• Week 40 Hospital

All babies should be seen by the GP at two weeks and six weeks. The mother should be seen by the GP at six weeks.
The scheme does not cover extra visits outside of this schedule unless you develop a pregnancy related complication such as pre-eclampsia or gestational diabetes.

Vaccines recommended in pregnancy

There are currently 2 vaccines strongly recommended for all pregnant women in each pregnancy.

The pertussis vaccine protects your newborn baby against whooping cough which is a life-threatening infection for an infant and we vaccinate the mothers from 16 weeks gestation in order to produce antibodies to pass across the placenta to the baby. These will last for approximately 6 months.

Influenza (flu) vaccine is recommended during the flu season for all pregnant women to protect mothers from influenza, which can be a life-threatening condition for pregnant women.
